Puddle Lane: Old Mr. Gotobed – My First Children’s Book from the Classic Ladybird Series

Old Mr. Gotobed is the very first children’s book I’ve read from the classic Puddle Lane series, and it feels like stepping back into a gentle, magical corner of the 1980s. Simple language, charming illustrations, and a calm, storybook atmosphere make it a great introduction to early reading.

If you grew up with Ladybird books—or you’re discovering them for the first time—this one is a lovely place to start.

About the Puddle Lane Series

The Puddle Lane children’s books were published by Ladybird Books during the second half of the 1980s. The stories were based on a TV program of the same name, and Sheila K. McCullagh, who wrote the stories for the TV series, also wrote the books.

A few things that make the series special:

It was designed as a reading programme, guiding children step by step from listening to reading.

Five sets (stages) of books were produced, with the first set being the easiest (Reading Programme Stage 1).

Each set has its own distinct cover colour, so it’s easy to see the reading level at a glance.

All books are hardcover, in the classic Ladybird size: about 7 inches tall and 4.75 inches wide.

In total, there are 54 books in the series.

The stories usually mix everyday life with a touch of magic and mystery, making them both comforting and exciting for young readers.

Stage 3 is a middle-level stage in the Puddle Lane reading programme. It’s ideal for children who are moving beyond very simple sentences and are ready for:

·        Slightly longer text

·        A bit more story development

·        Repeated words and patterns that help build confidence and fluency

The story centres on the character Old Mr. Gotobed, and, like other Puddle Lane tales, it gently blends the ordinary with a hint of magic and wonder. The tone is calm, comforting, and perfect for bedtime or quiet reading time.

Why Old Mr. Gotobed Works Well for Early Readers

Even as an adult reading it now, it’s easy to see why this book works so well for children:

  • Simple, clear language
The sentences are short and repetitive enough for young readers to follow, but still interesting.
  • Engaging illustrations
John Dillow’s artwork supports the text beautifully. Children can use the pictures to help understand—and predict—what’s happening.
  • Nostalgic and gentle tone
There’s no rush, no noise, and no overload. It feels like an old-fashioned storytime, which can be very reassuring for kids.
  • Part of a structured series
Because it’s in Stage 3, it fits neatly into a learning journey—children can move up or down stages depending on their confidence.

For me personally, as a first children’s book from this series, Old Mr. Gotobed feels like a perfect introduction to the world of Puddle Lane.
